In the Jutphaas neighbourhood of Nieuwegein, the old community centre at the Kerkveld has made way for 12 new homes that together form a small separate neighbourhood. The homes will be built around a newly created courtyard in four blocks of three houses each. This preserves the main structure of the community centre, in the form of the four blades of a windmill. To maintain its sense of community and sociability, the fronts of each home face the courtyard. Jutphaas was originally a village that was later merged with Vreeswijk, thus creating Nieuwegein. The historical neighbourhood still has its own strong character. Small-scale with a village character; lots of red brick and tiled roofs with dormer windows and skylights.
