from a neglected part of town to a sustainable housing project
Sustainable housing is now planned on the site where an early-twentieth-century residential block had been subject to dilapidation for years. Housing fund Avenue Lumiere acquired a number of properties on the corner of Gansstraat and Gruttostraat in Utrecht. A cleaning company, a garage and student accommodation will make way for residential buildings that will once again reflect the atmosphere of the pre-war urban development in this area. In collaboration with Vireo Vastgoed, VOCUS architects developed the design, which provides space for studios and flats - a mix of private and social rental - in a sustainable residential building. In projects like this, it is important to put yourself in the tradition of early twentieth-century building,' says Bob Custers of VOCUS architects. The construction is new, but it fits in with the rhythm of the surrounding residential blocks and the city itself.
